Travel Bucket List

Daily writing prompt
What countries do you want to visit?

Since my blog is all about travel, I thought I should answer this daily prompt.

An initial reaction to this question is perhaps a little unreasonable (though not untrue) – all of them. However, if I were forced to choose, I do have a few countries that are ‘top of the list’ for me, and I’ll list the reasons below.

  • Greece. I have wanted to visit Greece since I was about 6 or 7 and was first introduced to Greek mythology. I have loved Greek myths and modern adaptations in almost all their forms, from a childhood of reading Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan’s meshing of the Greek myths with our modern world to falling in love with Madeline Miller’s Song of Achilles and Circe. Beyond Greek myths, I love the flavours in Greek foods (although I know many Greeks would find my vegetarian diet to be lacking, especially when eating traditional foods). Greece has been a bucket list destination of mine since I was a teenager and I hope to get there soon.
  • Peru. As a Spanish-language learner, I would love to visit more hispanic countries. As well, I am drawn to the lure of Machu Picchu and Vinicunca. I would love to see all of South America, to be honest, but something about Peru makes me chose it over the others to add to this list.
  • Iceland. This country seems to be getting a lot of social media attention lately, however I have been intrigued by it for a long time. Being one of the most gender equal countries in the world brought Iceland to the forefront when I was writing my undergrad thesis, when I also learned about Iceland being the world’s largest green energy producer per capita (as much of their energy is geothermally produced). The unique landscape caught my eye and of course as a hiker here in Canada, I am drawn to the wilderness here.
  • New Zealand. Along the same lines as Iceland, I am interested in New Zealand for the landscape and the outdoorsy potential of travelling there. Watching Lord of the Rings (which is probably too commonly mentioned when discussing New Zealand), I was struck by how similar some of the landscape was to Western Canada. Of course I would love to see where the similarities are, but more importantly, the differences!
